Haines, W. Gilbert 'Gil'

Rhinebeck - W. Gilbert 'Gil' Haines, 92, passed away peacefully at his home in Rhinebeck
on February 25, 2008.

A lifelong resident of Rhinebeck, Gil was born June 15, 1915 to Percy Haines and Lillian
(Marquet) Haines.

During his years in Rhinebeck Gil was known as an accomplished builder with exceptional
carpentry skills. He was also an excellent mechanic. As a young man Gil owned and
operated a tree surgeon business prior to serving his country in World War II.

As an Army platoon sergeant with the legendary 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry
Division, Gil survived ten months of intense combat in Europe. For his efforts he was
awarded the Bronze Star, the European Theatre Medal with four battle stars among other
awards for exemplary service to his nation. He was also awarded three Purple Hearts for
injuries sustained in battle; and was extremely proud of his Combat Infantry Badge.

After the war Gil returned to Rhinebeck and raised his family. He was a very active
member with the community having served as a deputy sheriff for a period of time; as well
as being a life member of the Rhinebeck Fire Department, the American Legion Montgomery
Post #429, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In his spare time Gil enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing, training racing dogs, and most
importantly feeding the ducks.

On June 1st of this year Gil was to be honored by the village of Monarch, Luxemburg, for
having returned the town's Fire Brigade Banner thought lost during World War II.

Gilbert is survived by his son Richard and daughter-in-law Patricia of Atkinson, NH; a
daughter Nancy (Haines) Kadlecik and son-in-law Michael of Binghamton, NY; five
grandchildren, Kimberly Kadlecik Guttman, Manassas, VA, Rev. Robert Kadlecik, Montrose,
PA, Bradd Kadlecik, Pleasant Valley, NY, Jonathan Haines, Gilbert, AZ, and Meghan Haines,
Studio City, CA. He also has four great grandchildren Amber, Casys and Ryan Kadlecik,
and Brandon Guttman.

The family would like to thank Sue Rathjen, the Royalty Caregivers, especially Jill
Russell; and Hospice for the wonderful care that was given to Gil.

Calling hours are Wednesday, 4 to 7 PM, at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market
St., Rhinebeck. Members of the Rhinebeck Fire Dept. will conduct services at 6:30 PM and
