Rhinebeck – Robert C. Magee, 83, passed away Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at his home in Rhinebeck.
Bob worked 33 years until his retirement in 1986 as a Toll Collector for the NYS Thruway. He had also worked previously for Stark-Tator Oil Company, Federal Bearing and as a School Bus Driver in Rhinebeck.
From 1945-1947 he served as a Medic in the US ARMY. He has been a volunteer Fireman since 1944, and has served in the Saugerties, Rhinecliff and Hillside Fire Companies. He is a Past-Chief of the Hillside and Rhinecliff Fire Companies and is the oldest active fireman in New York State. Bob is a member of the American Legion Montgomery Post #429, The Red Hook VFW Post #7765, and the Rhinebeck Lions Club. For more than 14 years he was the chairman for the Third Lutheran Church and American Legion Dutchess County Fair Booths.
Born August 25, 1926 in Saugerties, he was the son of Leon and Helen (Warner) Magee.
On September 12, 1948 in Saugerties, he married Joyce O’Bryon. Mrs. Magee survives at home in Rhinebeck.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons Robert S. Magee, and his wife Mary of Warsaw, NY, and Richard Magee, and his wife Sandra of Red Hook; two daughters Roberta Magee Wright, and her husband James of Rutland, VT, and Regina Magee of the State of Washington; eleven grandchildren; a brother George Magee of Florida ; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two brothers James and Henry ; and a sister Florence George.
Calling hours are Tuesday, May 18th, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM, at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck. Members of the Red Hook VFW will conduct services at 7:15 PM, followed by members of Montgomery Post #429 at 7:30, The Rhinebeck Lions Club; and the Hillside Fire Department, and related companies, at 7:45.
Funeral services are Wednesday, May 19th, 11 AM, at the Funeral Home. Hillside Fire Company will Honor Bob with a Fireman’s Funeral Procession to the Rhinebeck Cemetery; and full military honors will be awarded by the members of the Red Hook VFW #7765 and the Montgomery Post #429.
