
Wyant, Byron G.
Byron G. ‘Barney’ Wyant, Sr., 87, passed away Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Mr. Wyant was a lifelong area resident having lived in Rhinebeck and Staatsburg for many years, and most recently at the Baptist Home, Rhinebeck. For many years he played with the Appleknockers Band; which was started by his father and included many of his siblings and family members.
He worked 32 years for the Rhinebeck Highway Department.
Mr. Wyant served in the US Army, 2828th Engineer Combat Battalion during WW II. He served in the European Theatre as part of Patton’s Third Army and was in action at the Battle of The Bulge and the liberation of Auschwitz. He was a member of the Red Hook VFW #7765.
Born February 23, 1923 in Greenport; he was the son of George and Sarah Mae (Simmons) Wyant.
On June 15, 1945 in Rhinebeck he married Helen Marie Butler. Mrs. Wyant passed away July 21, 1995.
Survivors include his children Sarah C. Haines of Pepperell, MA, Byron G. Wyant, Jr. of Germantown, Claudette Cavally of Milan, Patricia D. Meehan of Clermont, and Kenneth P. Wyant of Tivoli; 12 Grandchildren, 8 great children; three sisters Eva Herring of Florida, Winne Donerly of Red Hook, and Geri Bird of Elizaville; two brothers Robert Wyant of Rhinebeck and Raymond Wyant of Richfield Springs, NY; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter Theresa M. Cavally; three sisters Dorothy Wyant, Laura Strickle, and Gertrude Wyant and three brothers Bill Wyant, Lloyd Wyant, Sr. and George Wyant.
Calling hours are Sunday, April 25th, 1 to 3 PM, at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck. Funeral services will begin at 3 PM at the Funeral Home. Brother Keith Anderson will officiate. Interment will be Tuesday, April 27th, 9 AM, in the Veterans Section of Rhinebeck Cemetery.
