Audrey E. McLaughlin

Rhinebeck- Audrey E. McLaughlin, 97, passed away on July 19, 2018 at Ferncliff Nursing Home.

Born on November 8, 1920 in Poughkeepsie, NY, she was the daughter of the late Edward R. and Alice (Post) Brenner.

Audrey graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1939 and in 1940 she graduated from Wood-Purinton Secretarial School.

In 1941 she was employed by the War Department, first located in the Social Security building in Washington DC and then was relocated to the Pentagon while it was under construction. In 1943 she was transferred to the Tank Automotive in Detroit before returning to the Pentagon in 1945.

While in Washington she met her future husband, Daniel B. McLaughlin from Oregon. They married in Poughkeepsie on June 23, 1946 at Christ Church and in April 1947, the two purchased the Van Steenbergh farm in Rhinebeck, NY.

Audrey was an avid traveler and seamstress; she made many intricate quilts after she retired from the Dutchess County District Attorney’s office. She was very active in the Ulster County Genealogy and was able to trace her lineage back to Jan Jansen Postmael, her 8th generation grandfather from Holland. Audrey was a member of the Chancellor Livingston Chapter of the DAR as well as an active participant at Always There Adult Day Care in Kingston for the past five years up to July 3 of this year. 

Audrey was predeceased by her husband, Dan as well as granddaughter Megan Sherrod, her brother Edward Paul Brenner, and a son-in-law Alex Koutsoukos.

She is survived by her daughters Sharon (Bill) Sherrod, Pat McLaughlin-Koutsoukos; her son Gary; 3 grandchildren Sean (Jamiee), Briana (Jeff), and Jacqueline (Butch); and several great grandchildren.

There are no calling hours.

A private graveside service will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Rhinecliff, NY at the convenience of the family.
