George-Anne H. Burke, 75, of Rhinebeck, passed away at her home on August 4, 2018, beside her loving daughter.
Born on November 17, 1942, at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of George and Dorothy Ackerland (Wright) Hoppock. Her father graduated from the United States Naval Academy and served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
On November 26, 1966, at Annandale-on-Hudson, she married the love of her life Kenneth James Burke with the President of Bard College presiding. Mr. Burke passed away on December 11, 2015.
Mrs. Burke graduated from Red Hook High School and worked as a legal secretary for her husband, a defense Attorney in Rhinebeck. Mrs. Burke and her husband retired in 1994. In her life, Mrs. Burke cultivated a wide variety of interests which included tending her flower garden; studying both ancient and 20th century history; British mystery novels (Inspector Morse was a particular favorite); listening to her large and diverse collection of American jazz music; public television (she was a devoted viewer of Upstairs-Downstairs, Masterpiece Theater, and Downton Abbey); the Staatsburg Public Library; cooking; and French culture and design. Mrs. Burke also loved nature in all its diversity and wonder, and she especially loved walking on a beach, contemplating the ocean, admiring the brilliant colors of autumn leaves, and Hudson Valley thunderstorms.
Mrs. Burke is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Hoppock and Lisa Williams of Summerville, SC; brother George Hoppock of Summerville, SC; son John Lothrop Burke of Redding, CA; daughter Sarah Holcombe Burke of Rhinebeck; and grandson Taylor Fortune Conroy of Larkspur, CA.
Services for Mrs. Burke were held on August 14, 2018, at the Rhinebeck Village Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, Rhinebeck.
