Born on November 17, 1942, at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of George and Dorothy Ackerland (Wright) Hoppock. Her father graduated from the United States Naval Academy and served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mrs. Burke also loved nature in all its diversity and wonder, and she especially loved walking on a beach, contemplating the ocean, admiring the brilliant colors of autumn leaves, and Hudson Valley thunderstorms.

Mrs. Burke is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Hoppock and Lisa Williams of Summerville, SC; brother George Hoppock of Summerville, SC; son John Lothrop Burke of Redding, CA; daughter Sarah Holcombe Burke of Rhinebeck; and grandson Taylor Fortune Conroy of Larkspur, CA.
