Muriel E. Egan

Rhinebeck – Muriel died at home with her daughters by her side on Friday, September 8, 2017.

She was able to remain home thanks to her wonderful caregiver Sharron and the greatly appreciated help of Hospice.

Muriel was born at home in Ridgewood Queens on Christmas Day 1923, to James Farrell and Emily Frey.

She graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in Queens in 1941.  Her dream was to be an English teacher but she knew that wouldn’t be possible, so she took all the secretarial courses to be able to work and help support her family.  She was the only support of her mother and younger sister and brother after her father’s death in 1942.

On February 12, 1949 she married the love of her life James J. Egan.  James predeceased her in 1969.

Over the years she worked various fields but the job she liked the most was supervisor of Medical Transcription at Benedictine Hospital.  She worked there 15 years from 1979 until the department dissolved in 1994,  Though she retired then, she continued to work another 10 years at part time jobs.

Muriel was a lifelong baseball fan.  Her team was the NY Giants until they moved to San Francisco in 1958.  She had no favorite team for a long time and then in her later years she became an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

She liked dogs, country living, fishing, watching game shows, movies, playing cards and bingo.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Colleen Lazarus of Saugerties and Susan Cleary of Rhinebeck; 7 grandchildren Scott, David, Bonnie, Lori, James, Laura and Shannon and several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and her beloved dog Peanut.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son James J. Egan, Jr., her sister Lucille Boye and her brother James E. Farrell.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 13, 11 AM, at St. Christopher’s Church in Red Hook.  Immediately following, her ashes will be buried next to her husband in Rhinebeck Cemetery.
