It has been almost a year since Jay passed and I must say I still miss him. Jay was such a nice guy who could make you smile in a flash. It was at the Kopper Kettle coffee shop in Rhinebeck where Jay would join his friends and follow builders every morning. He was just one of the great characters who would come in and hangout. There were four or five tables that one could sit at for a cup of coffee and a good laugh. People like Andy Reid, Bud Howl, Roger Doyle, Royce 'Buss' VanKeuren, the von der Lieth brothers (Rich, John and Teddy), Ed White, Nat Post, Tom Lewis, etc. This is were I had the opportunity to get to know Jay and his family. His two sons, Kevin and Jeff, were a part of his family team and they too will leave their mark on Rhinebeck. Kevin and Jeff are a reminder to us all of what a great person Jay was. My deepest sympathies not only to his family, but to all of Rhinebeck. Jay is surely missed.

My grandfather was one of my heros, I am going to miss him dearly. He laid a great path for all of us to follow. I often times find myself asking "What would Poppy think about this" in my day to day life. I am convinced that this process has helped me and my family make good decisions on our journey of life. Poppy, I love you and am going to miss you. Until we meet again, god speed. See you on the other side!!!

My dear, sweet adorable Poppie, may you now rest with ease. I know that you were probably elated to see your beautiful wife when you crossed over. I can hear you know telling me just how beautiful grandma Espie was. I will so miss seeing your big smile when you saw us girls and the warm inviting hugs you gave me. You will be missed so very much, I am just not sure you know just how much or how hard it will really be for us. The Bagel Shop in Rhinebeck will never be the same. I love you so very much. This is not goodbye for me, it is simply until we see each other again. aiai

Many of my happiest times living in Rhinebeck were the days I spend with Lorraine and Jay - endless card games, sometimes all night long- laughing the whole time - Jeff and Kevin, your parents were the best people I ever met and I have never forgotten them. I am so sorry for you and your families, but you were so blessed to have had such wonderful parents.

To Jaybird's Family & friends my condolences to you. I've had the pleasure of having serviced Jay everyday day for the last 11 years at the Rhinebeck Bagel Shop. Not only was he a thoughtful, caring, and knowledgable person I've learned over the years but, also a dear friend. Ive had the pleasure of many mornings of great conversations and great laughs with him. From our morning smokes to his afternoon jokes. Always smiling, happy and proud of all of you. He will me greatly miss at the shop and as one of the "Breakfast Club" members. May he find peace and happiness once again reunited with his wife whom he shared fond memories of her with me in our converstations. He will be in my thoughts and prays always. ai I will miss you Jaybird and our morning breaks together.

I write this note with a heavy heart but one filled with gratefulness to have had Jay Espie as part of my life. I grew up down the street from Jay and his family and he was an inspiration and almost a second father to me in my formative years. Growing up he offered an open door to this kid down the road and always had a positive thought to keep me going- regardless of whether others didn't believe in me. Jay always told me I could be successful and I believed it! I moved away in 1980 but always checked in with Jay when I was in town. Jay supported my Dad when he was struggling through his own challenges and I so appreciate that. He remained a friend and mentor to my whole family throughout decades of ups and downs and I thank him for that. I have a favorite photo of Jay and my dad that is in my office that I treasure. As time passed I always made a point to visit Jay when I was in town even if it was just to have a coffee downtown to say hello and he was always so warm and supportive to me. Jay always had a smile and hug for this out of towner and made a point of being supportive and telling me how proud he was of what I'd accomplished. I will forever be grateful to the impact his wonderful man had on my life and so sad at the loss of this vibrant man to all of those he touched over the many years we have known him and to his family.who were so close. I wish I could be there to pay my respects - but hope that my thoughts and memories of this wonderful man and how he affected my life in such a positive way and I am sure so many others is a testament of how loved and how much he will be missed. Rest in Peace - I miss you already Love Linda Howells Friar

So sorry to hear about this. I still remember swimming in the pool and Mr. Espie coming in after a hard days work and would jump in - clothes, boots and all. Such fond memories of both Mr. and Mrs. Espie. Really fond memories of everyone in this great family. I went my separate way after going into the military but frequently look back at my days on Mt Rutson Rd. I wish I could be there with you to honor such a great man. A special remembrance to Mr. Espie for him being such a rock for my Dad to lean on when during hard times.

Myself and our family are very sorry to hear about the sad news of Poppy passing. I'm sure a lot of people know him by Jay or Espie, but we know him by Poppy. He was a great man, a wonderful soul, an incredible grandfather and I'm sure an even better father. He will be dearly missed but his kind face and loving memories will last a lifetime. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of his family and friends.

As a young married couple we moved into our home in June 1969 and became acquainted with the Espie family, just up the hill behind our house, and having continued to live in our house to this day, we have known Jay Espie all this time. Our son, Aaron, actually learned to swim in Jay's pool as an 8-month-old infant. We want to express our deepest sympathy to his wonderful family. Both his sons, Jeff and Kevin, have grown up during our lifetime in the neighborhood and we still remember Jay's jovial personality and always positive attitude which never flagged even during his last days on earth. We hope that these beautiful memories of Jay in our lives and those of his family will strengthen and support them during this sad time. Dagmar and Wayne Yaddow
