Sr. Gloria Mooney, SU, (Mother Mary Lawrence), a Sister of St. Ursula, died peacefully in Rhinebeck, NY on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 surrounded by members of her community, family and friends.
Born June 14, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY to the late John Joseph and Elizabeth Grey Mooney, Gloria entered the Society of St. Ursula on September 8, 1946 and made final vows on September 26, 1953. Before being called to leadership positions in the community, Gloria served as teacher and principal at the Academy of St. Ursula - Marygrove in Kingston, NY and at St. Gregory the Great School in Milwaukee, WI. Gloria taught at Notre Dame School in NYC, St. Joseph School in Kingston, NY and St. Augustine School in Providence, RI. She was also on the staff of the little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Services in East Harlem. Most recently, Gloria served as community archivist and moderator of the Alumnae Association of Marygrove.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth and a brother, William. Her sister, Sr. Mary Alice Mooney, SU, her sisters in community and numerous nieces and nephews survive her.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 27 at 2:30 pm at Linwood Spiritual Center (50 Linwood Road, Rhinebeck, NY).
Visiting hours will be 10 am - 1 pm prior to the Mass.
We are grateful for the loving care Gloria was given by the staff at Thompson House and the Hudson Valley Hospice.
