Carolyn Janice (Huber) Keator died at the age of 93 on June 4, 2024.
She was the daughter of Helena Hover Huber and Ambrose Lee Huber.
Her husband of 64 years, Jermyn (Jim) Colville Keator, predeceased her, as did her sister, Mary Huber Frazer, her brother Lawrence Huber and her nephew, Silas E. Frazer.
She is survived by her nieces, Sara Frazer of Williamsburg, VA, Lee Ann Ahlin of McKeesport PA, Karen Huber of Kingston, NY and nephews, Peter Huber of Rhinebeck, NY and Russell Huber of Tivoli, NY, as well as great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She will be especially missed by Susan Sausto her friend and companion of more than 30 years.
Living in Rhinebeck had its advantages. As a child, Carolyn spent time at the Roosevelt Estate and knew the President and his family. She had recollections of FDR visiting her father at their home, prior to his death. When Winston Churchill visited the Roosevelts, she had the opportunity to meet him and rode
horses with his daughter.
Carolyn attended the Rhinebeck School system and graduated from the State University of New York at Oneonta. With the exception of her college years, Carolyn lived in Rhinebeck, NY her entire life. She taught 3rd and 5th grades in the Rhinebeck School System for 40 years and always said she enjoyed every minute of it. She was innovative in her teaching and was responsible for bringing computers into the elementary school. She was listed in Who’s Who among Human Service Professionals and Who’s Who in American Education.
When not teaching, she enjoyed bridge, golf and traveling. Carolyn viewed traveling to different countries as a way to bring something new into the classroom for her students. Upon retirement, she was a member of the Rhinebeck Historical Society and acted as a docent at Wilderstein.
Funeral Services will be private, as per her wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Rhinebeck Starr Library.
Arrangements under the direction of the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, Rhinebeck, NY.
