Rhinebeck – Gale Quinn Schaefer died at home in Rhinebeck, NY on November 30, 2023, surrounded with love by her family and by caregivers who comforted and consoled her through her final illness.
She was born in Red Hook, NY to the late Frederick and Elsie Quinn on June 11, 1938.
She graduated from Red Hook High School in 1956 and Skidmore College in 1960.
Her passion during her teenage and early twenties was horseback riding and teaching children to ride. She won both the Medal and the McClay, was an A Pony Club member, rode at the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden, and competed with the equestrian team at Skidmore. She had an uncanny ability to speak to animals. When other humans were ignored, horses and dogs seemed to listen and understand. She taught her children who in turn taught her grandchildren to identify trees and birds, to know the difference between the leaves of a black oak and a red oak and to recognize a downy woodpecker as smaller than the hairy woodpecker.
She met her husband Paul J. Schaefer through a mutual love of horses. They were married in 1961 at the Chapel of the Holy Innocents at Bard College where her mother was the Registrar. After marriage, she lived with her family for over fifty years in rural Clinton Corners amidst open fields and scattered woodlands populated by animals, wild and tame, before moving to Rhinebeck in 2015.
She often said, “My family is important to me.” She is survived by her husband Paul, her two daughters; Sarah S. Schaefer, MD of Westfield, NJ and Emily Gallagher of Pennington, NJ as well as three granddaughters, Abbie Hurwitz, Sophie Hurwitz, and Franny Gallagher.
There will be no calling hours and services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, please contribute to her favorite charity, Planned Parenthood of the Hudson Valley or to Hudson Valley Hospice, who eased her journey to the nether world.
Arrangements under the direction of the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, Rhinebeck, NY.
