Helen Egerton Gilmour Huber, 97, of Rhinebeck, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024.
Born on July 30, 1926, she was the only child of Annie Crombie Gilmour McGregor and James Douglas Gilmour. Raised in Yonkers, she graduated from Bucknell University in 1948, with an engineering degree.
On May 5th, 1951, she married Lawrence Lee (Jake) Huber and moved to Jake’s hometown of Rhinebeck. While raising their 4 children, Helen returned to college at New Paltz to get her teaching certification and then her Master’s Degree in Reading. Thus began her 20-year career, teaching 1st and 3rd graders in the Rhinebeck school District. After retiring in 1982, Helen volunteered both at the Baptist Home’s Coffee Shop and for over 25 years at the Starr Library. At the same time, she lovingly cared for her handicapped adult daughter, until she was 90 years old. She was often seen walking beside her adult tricycle as Karen pedaled up Old Post Road.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Russell (Victoria) Huber of Tivoli, who kindly watched over Helen these past few years, and Peter Huber of Rhinebeck. Her daughters, Lee Ann (Robert) Ahlin of McKeesport, PA and Karen Huber of Kingston; grandchildren, Justin and Joshua (Kelly) Huber, Robert (Leah) and Matthew Ahlin, and step-grandson, Sean (Anna) Phillips; Great-grandchildren, Langley, Lucas, Brooks, Silas, Eliza, Carter, Eliza, Edie, Roya and Sean.
A special thank you to her caretakers, Joan, Karen, and Dionne who lovingly took care of her these past 2 years.
The family would also like to extend a special thank you to Corinne and Tasha as well as all of Hudson Valley Hospice for their extended care and kindness during Helen’s final time.
Mom loved reading and her years of volunteering at the Starr Library.
