James Miller Obituary

Hyde Park NY– James F. Miller passed away Peacefully with family at Vassar Brothers Hospital on November 25, 2024. 

Born on Sept 24, 1937, in Poughkeepsie, NY, the son of the late Clarence A. and Florence (Roettinger) Miller. 

On May 20,1960 in Poughkeepsie, NY, he married his beloved wife Shirley F. Brockel, who predeceased him in 2016.  He was a loving father of son Gary and Marie Daley, son Scott J and Pam Miller and his daughter Deborah A Miller.  His son Scott predeceased him in February of this year.  He was a proud grandfather of Christopher (Ami), Katelyn (Joseph), Brian (Jennifer), Timothy partner Kelly, Erin partner Jacob and Sara partner Joseph.

Great Granddad of, Oliver and Logann, Stella and Silas, James and Avery, Timothy, Hudson and Madison and Eliza.  He is also survived by his brother Clarence Miller and. many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by sisters Shirley Denning and Florance Phillips and brothers Joesph, William, Theodore, Louis and Richard Miller and several nieces and nephews and many close family friends.

Jim graduated Poughkeepsie High School in 1955. While in high school he was in the glee club and worked at Lincon center (as a youth counselor) until 1961, where he met his beloved wife of 57 years.

For the next 37 years he worked for IBM of Poughkeepsie. He began at entry level position and advanced to Senior Programmer as well as First and Second Line Manager, receiving many awards for his excellent leadership.  He ended his career with IBM in Kingston as Programmer and Technology Consultant in May 1992.

During his 32 years of retirement, he greatly enjoyed traveling across the pond to Scotland to visit close friends who are” family “.  As well as spending his winters in his Melbourne beach home in FL with his wife, where they were very active making life-long friendships with many special couples.  He enjoyed fishing as a youth on the Hudson River and as an adult at Copake Lake with his kids and grandchildren.  Jim took much pride and pleasure in his many hobbies, such as wood working, playing the organ and singing, reading, playing sudoku, cards, board games with family and friends, playing solitaire and watching movies on his laptop most recently.

 He cherished his family and friends; he had unwavering love and devotion to them all.    

Jim will always be remembered for his generosity, loyalty, positive encouragement and lighthearted humor. He provided for and was always there for his family.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, 

We want to give special thanks to Jim’s Doctor, Eliot Levine, MD. and his nurses at Vassar Hospital.  An extra special thank you to his Nurse Kathleen on 7N for going above and beyond for our Dad. 

Per his wishes, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at the Hyde Park Union Cemetery on Friday December 6 at 10:30 AM.
