Jill Van Etten Obituary

Rhinecliff - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jill Van Etten, a loving wife, devoted mother, and cherished grandmother, who left this world on February 15, 2025. For over 30 years, Jill battled Multiple Sclerosis with a quiet strength that was nothing short of remarkable. She never once let the disease define her. Instead, she chose to live with grace, resilience, and an unbreakable spirit.

Born June 16, 1956, in Jamaica Queens NY. Jill’s family eventually left Long Island and settled in Red Hook. She touched many lives from working at Foster’s or the Golden Hill Nursing Home to participating in a variety of craft groups.

Jill was the most generous person. She was funny, optimistic, and a joy to be around. Her greatest joy in life was her family—especially her two sons, Chad and Casey, whom she adored. Being their mother was her greatest honor and joy. When grandchildren came into her life, her heart only grew bigger. Jill’s kindness, strength, and warmth left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.

She had a passion for cooking and crafting, whether it was making jewelry, knitting, or creating something special for those she loved. Her many projects like necklaces, bracelets, pottery and stained glass will serve as a proud reminder of her.

Jill leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, creativity, and kindness. She is survived by her devoted husband of over 30 years, Peter Van Etten, her beloved sons Chad Martin (Andrea) and Casey Martin (Sarah), her cherished grandchildren, Tessa, Jameson and Abigail, her siblings Jay Lieske (Donna), Shelley Sakellariou (Christos), Tammy Firmbach (Karl) and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father John Lieske, mother Bernice Starkie, loving step father Richard Starkie Jr, and brother Richard Starkie III.

Her family is also deeply grateful to all of her health aides, especially Jen, whose care and companionship meant so much in her later years.

Friends and family may call on Sunday, February 23rd, from 1pm to 3pm at Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck N.Y. A short prayer service will take place at 2:45pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jill’s name to the National MS Society in honor of her enduring strength and compassion.
