Joan E. McEleney, 88, of Rhinebeck, passed away peacefully at home on February 5 surrounded by her loving family.
Born in the Bronx on February 5, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Helen (Weiss) Breen.
On February 11, 1956 at St. Ann's Church in the Bronx, she married Patrick F. McEleney. Mr. McEleney predeceased her in 2006.
Joan was full of energy and always on the go. While living in the Bronx, raising five young children and working full time, she attended and graduated from Bronx Community College with a nursing degree. She subsequently worked as an RN at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx. In 1976 she moved to Red Hook, NY where she worked many years in the office of Dr. Richard Bierstock in Rhinebeck.
Joan was a faithful parishioner of St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook and Good Shepherd Church in Rhinebeck. In 2007, she moved to Hopewell Junction, NY, and became a eucharistic minister at the Church of St. Denis. Joan returned to Rhinebeck in 2017. Joan loved to travel and spend time with her family and friends.
In addition to her husband, Joan was predeceased by her daughter Eileen McEleney and brother Thomas Breen.
She is survived by her sons, Patrick (Judith) of Glenville, NY, Brian of Barbados, Dennis (Luca) of London, UK and Neil (Missie) of Patterson, NY; grandchildren Sean, Ryan, Brendan, Conor, Rebecca, Christopher, and Robert; and great-grandchildren Peyton, Annabelle, and Finnley, as well as many friends and extended family.
Calling hours will be held at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., on Thursday February 10 from 4 PM to 7 PM and on Friday February 11 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
A Mass will be celebrated at Good Shepherd Church, 3 Mulberry St., Rhinebeck, on February 11 at 1 PM.
Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Rhinecliff, at the convenience of the family.
