Karen Simmons

Rhinebeck – Karen Anne Simmons, 77, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2024, at the Hudson Valley Hospice House in Hyde Park, NY, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on April 6, 1947, in Rhinebeck, Karen was the daughter of the late William Sr. and Doris Kirby, and sister to Patricia, William Jr., Suzanne, and Marian.

Karen is survived by her beloved husband, Barry. Their love story began on a double date, at the end of which, Barry boldly told Karen he would marry her someday. They wed six months later, on March 14, 1970, in Rhinebeck, NY, and remained madly in love for over 54 years.

Karen dedicated 32 years to the Dutchess County Department of Health as a Health Inspector. After retiring, she took on various roles, including a decade with the Census Bureau. She and Barry also owned and operated Sweets & Treats in Rhinebeck, which they sold in 2020.

A lifelong learner, Karen enjoyed numerous hobbies such as gardening, hiking, baking, calligraphy, cross-stitch, sewing, and furniture restoration. Karen took great joy in bringing comfort and companionship to everyone she met, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer her company. She was the glue that held her family together, creating magic out of everyday life.

In addition to her husband, Karen is survived by her children, Rebecca (Brian) Tamm of Rhinebeck, NY, and Trevor (Adoracion) Simmons of Concord, MA; her grandchildren, Daphne Tamm, Luna Simmons, and William Simmons; and several nieces and nephews. They all miss her terribly but are grateful for the time they had with her. To love her and be loved by her was truly a gift. 

Calling hours will be held at the Rhinebeck Reformed Church on Saturday, January 18th, at 10 am, followed by a memorial service at 11 am.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled later in the year, as Karen requested many years ago: "Please don’t cry for me – have a party and celebrate our time together."
