Rhinebeck - Martin John Cavally, 77, of Rhinebeck, New York, passed away on August 18, 2023 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, New York.
He was born November 26, 1945 in Manhattan, New York to Louis and Florence (Rossi) Cavally. On December 24, 1966 he married his bride Claudette M. Wyant of Rhinebeck, New York.
Martin graduated from Red Hook Central School in 1964. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a supply sergeant and helicopter crew chief during the Vietnam War. While working and supporting his family, he graduated with an Associate Degree from Dutchess Community College with honors in 1970. Martin worked for the United States Postal Service for 33 years with his final position serving as Postmaster of Millerton, New York. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a skilled public speaker and debater.
In his free time, Martin was an avid chess player and a very capable drawer and painter. He enjoyed science fiction, films, music, and working on his various home projects. He was a talented guitar player and played with the band The Survivors. Martin was an archery teacher and enthusiast and earned his black belt in karate. Most importantly, he was a loving and proud husband, father, and Papa who adored his family. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered and cherished by his loved ones.
Martin is survived by his wife of 56 years, Claudette Cavally, a daughter, Kelly (Michael) Dreher, a granddaughter Chiara (Andrew) Zlotnick, a great grandson Matthew Zlotnick and a great grandchild due in September, a brother, Lawrence Cavally, a niece Julie Cavally, a nephew Andrew Cavally, along with many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Calling hours will be on Saturday, August 26, 2023 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W Market St, Rhinebeck, NY 12572, immediately followed by interment at Town of Rhinebeck Cemetery. A time of sharing will begin at 12:30 pm during the calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society on behalf of Martin Cavally.
