Mel Ohrbach, a U.S. Navy veteran who went on to become a fashion executive and, with his wife, helped usher in the era of the curated lifestyle store, died on April 3, 2025.
Alongside his wife and creative partner, Barbara Milo Ohrbach, Mel co-founded Cherchez Ltd.—a boutique that opened in Manhattan in the late 1970s. More than a store, Cherchez offered a way of life. It led to 21 books authored by Barbara, including the bestseller The Scented Room, which embodied their belief that beauty resides in everyday rituals and refined simplicity.
Ohrbach attended the University of Alabama and served on a submarine minesweeper during the Korean War. He was a member of the Ohrbach department store family. Known for his discerning eye and a gift for effortless elegance, he later built a successful career in the fashion industry before launching Cherchez.
He spent much of his life in Millbrook, N.Y., where he was known for his warmth, humor, and unwavering generosity. He was a devoted mentor to six nieces and nephews, and a man whose presence seemed to brighten every room he entered.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara. One of their books was titled All Things Are Possible—a belief Mel brought to life.
There are no services planned at this time. Memorial donations can be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV): https://www.ihelpveterans.org/
