Germantown – Robert W. Martens, 74, passed away peacefully in Rhinebeck on April 4, 2023 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Peekskill, NY on July 28, 1948, he was the son of the late James Robert and Madolyn (Marler) and shared a special bond with his step-father, the late Robert Curry.
On June 30, 1973 he married Mary Walker in Pawling, NY. Mrs. Martens survives at home.
Robert graduated Dover Senior High School in 1966. He continued his education, graduating Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. However, his real love was cars so he fueled that love with his business Bob's Auto Wreckers in Wingdale. After selling and moving to Germantown, he worked a few jobs as a maintenance mechanic and lastly an electrician. Although he sold the junkyard, he remained true to his passion and could be found daily at his garage tinkering with cars.
He was an avid race fan and regularly attended many events over the years taking thousands of pictures. Some of which are published in books.
Bob will be genuinely missed by all that came to know him over the years. His smile was contagious and his spirit lifted the room.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his children, William (Melody) Martens, Melissa (Brian) Cruger, and Laurel (Nick) Lango; his grandchildren Aryana, Melinda, and Sean; and his sisters Bonnie Grozenger and Judy Wilms as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Calling Hours will be held at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck, NY, 12572 on Tuesday April 11 from 4 PM to 7 PM.
A Time of Sharing will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday April 12 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in the Hillside Cemetery, 1033 Oregon Rd., Cortlandt Manor, NY, 10567.
Memorial Donations in honor of Robert can be made to Jennings-Willets American Legion Post #346, PO Box 418 Germantown, NY 12526.
