Sr. Mary Rose Murray, SU, 90, died peacefully at ArchCare Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck, NY on August 10, 2021. She was born Anne Bernadette Murray, May 2, 1931, in the Bronx, NY to the late Rose and Joseph Murray. Sr. Mary Rose entered the Sisters of St. Ursula in Kingston, NY, on September 7, 1952, professed her first vows on January 13, 1955 and made final vows on January 23, 1960.
Sr. Mary Rose graduated from Cathedral High School, New York City, received her BA in French from Manhattanville College, NY, and MA in theology from Providence College. Sr. Mary Rose was on the faculty at St. Augustine Elementary School in Providence, RI and subsequently was Principal there. She taught in the elementary school and was a member of the French Department at the Academy of St. Ursula in Kingston, NY. She also taught Religious Studies and served as librarian at Notre Dame School in New York City. She was a teacher and Principal of John A Coleman Catholic High School in Kingston. After retiring from her work in schools, Sr. Mary Rose was a compassionate parish minister at St. Joseph in Kingston and at St. Mary’s in Wilmington, NC.
She was predeceased by her parents, Rose & Joseph Murray, her sisters, Rosaleen Sage and Mary M. Houlihan, and three brothers, Msgr. James J Murray, John T. Murray and Patrick Murray. In addition to her religious family, the Sisters of St. Ursula, Sr. Mary Rose is survived by a large, loving extended family and the many friends she made everywhere she served, including her final years in skilled nursing facilities.

A memorial hour will be held at Linwood Chapel, Rhinebeck, NY on Saturday, August 14 at 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be private at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
