Red Hook – Susan H. Ellis, 77, a longtime resident of Red Hook, passed away on November 12, 2023 at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck.
Born on November 14, 1945 in Rhinebeck, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Humphries) Hoffman.
Susan grew up in Red Hook, NY, being raised on the Hoffman’s Family Farm and graduating from Red Hook High School in 1963. From there, she attended Vassar College, receiving her BA in Geology in 1967. She married the love of her life James Ellis in Red Hook in 1967 and they remained local to the Dutchess County area. James passed away in 2008.
Susan’s interest in sciences sparked her career in Conservation. Over the years she worked for several environmental agencies inspecting waterways, trails, and the local wildlife for potential hazards. In later years, she found a passion for antiques and started her own business, Ellis Eclectics, where she set up items from shops in Great Barrington all the way to Hyde Park.
Susan loved animals, often rescuing cats and dogs that needed a little extra care. She once nursed a cat back to health after being shot by an arrow. She also enjoyed going to local music events at cafes like Taste Budds or the Morton Library.
Susan is survived by a daughter, Jennifer (John Scollo) Ellis of WA, her brothers Roger (Pam) Hoffman, Jonathan (Debby) Hoffman, and David (Scottie) Hoffman as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to her husband James, she was predeceased by a sister Barbara Close.
Services will be held at a later date this spring.
