I am so sorry to hear of Vern's passing. I have known Vern and his wife since I was thirteen and was the hostess at Foster's Coach House. He was always so nice to me and I looked forward to their weekly visit.

It is with a heavy heart that I need to ask Mary to accept my sincerest condolences on the passing of her loving husband, one of the truly nicest men I knew while I was growing up in Rhinebeck. Knowing the Sipperlys was an honor and a blessing. May he RIP.

Rhinebeck lost one of its bravest and truest gentlemen yesterday. Vern Sipperley was dedicated to our community, to his beautiful and loving wife, to his family and friends and to his neighbors. When I first moved across the street, ‘Mr. Sipperley’ would sweep it after every storm and would trim the hedges of his neighbors when permitted. We’d also spot him trimming the grass around the stop signs through our beautiful village. When I had a problem with my plumbing, Vern was there to identify the problem and tell Nick where the pipe was.... the old orangeburg pipe needed to be replaced. As the years passed, Mary and Vern became more than just neighbors but also our friends. Always very loving and kind to our family, especially the girls asking how school was and seeing if they could help with anything. We would pop over around the holidays to see their decorations and Mary was known to stop in with a little treat from time to time. I must that that even with that closeness, I can’t recall a day they weren’t dressed to the nines and ready for unexpected visitors though on many days I was in my loungewear without a hairdo or a bit of makeup. What an example of how to grow old with such class!

Though he never showed it, to say the last couple years have been harder on Vern would be an understatement. Always with a big smile and trying to keep up with the conversation, our Vern faced difficulties getting around and at our last visit staying in the conversation. That said, his love for Mary and the life they shared was always so apparent as was Mary’s love for Vern. In their beautiful home and the wonderful life they shared... I think 64 years of marriage too! I was surprised to find they had practiced different (although similar) religions all these years.... Vern attended The Church of the Messiah while Mary attends Good Shepherd.... May we all find both love and devotion that strong!

I’d like to think Vern is in heaven with his loved ones having a good old time.... He’s with Honey Dew enjoying a stiff drink, reminiscing about the Rhinebeck of yesteryear, the many concerts he enjoyed at the Dutchess County Fair, of his firefighting days and Pocahontas and laughing with that sparkle in his eye, ever so dapper. No doubt he’ll be watching over Mary, waiting for his soulmate to join him after she raises their pup Gypsy.

Rest In Peace, Sweet Vern...we’ll take care of Mary until you can once more. In the meantime, may Mary, Vernon’s beloved brother Pete, Karl Fredrick Sipperley, the Sipperley and Riley families find comfort in the many years shared and in knowing Vern’s no longer suffering.

A little poem that has so often brought me comfort in grief.....

The Rose Still Grows Beyond the Wall
by AL Frink

Near a shady wall a rose once grew,
Budded and blossomed in God's free light,
Watered and fed by the morning dew,
Shedding it's sweetness day and night.

As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
Slowly rising to loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall
Through which there shone a beam of light.

Onward it crept with added strength
With never a thought of fear or pride,
It followed the light through the crevice's length
And unfolded itself on the other side.

The light, the dew, the broadening view
Were found the same as they were before,
And it lost itself in beauties new,
Breathing it's fragrance more and more.

Shall claim of death cause us to grieve
And make our courage faint and fall?
Nay! Let us faith and hope receive--
The rose still grows beyond the wall,

Scattering fragrance far and wide
Just as it did in days of yore,
Just as it did on the other side,
Just as it will forever-more.
